Anti white??? How can anyone say that?!But then it is easy to relate when you've heard all your childhood that you're dark because you wash your face with the dirt from your feet.
I was curious about it since I heard Toni Morison in a interview where she explained she had this friend ho was truly beautiful but thought she wasn't because she didn't have blue eyes, and this is what inspired the book. it reminded me of stories my mother told me about life in africa when she was young. The same wish to "whiten" yourself, the same prejudices...
And very moving.
The Claiming Of Sleeping Beauty
almost done with this book, but boy is it being hard to finish!I don't I will be able to hear the word spanking for a while without a cringe.
my friends were right, you think it cannot possibly get worse but it does, everytime.
I'm not into S and M, Exit to Eden worked for me, because it was more about the game, the roleplay, I could understand that. But here it's sheer humiliation and pain. It's hard for me to find it the slightest bit erotic. In fact there passages that made me contort in horror.
And it's not even that well written.

"Bernica bobs her hair" and "The Ice Castle" were probably my favorites.Liked the construction of Mayday.
Just had problems with "the bowl" because all the football references. Couldn't understand them.
I definetely enjoy Fitzerald's short stories more than his novels, except for Gatsby of course.

Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture
I was afraid the book would be too dated and all the hype around the book when it was first released made me suspicious, but I actually enjoyed it. Maybe because I remember those after-yupiism times and was able to put it in context.But more than the main plot, I enjoyed the "couplandisms" and the stories the characters tell each other.
Since some coupland fans seem to find this his weakest book, I am now quite curious about the others.

Beautiful book, not recommended if you are feeling down though.Glad it was in english and portuguese because I often had to read the poem several times, sometimes aloud, to be able to undestand the meaning, as her phrase construction is uncommon.

The Warriors
Never thought it would take so long to read such an apparently small book!But I guess it was all the violence. The killing/ gang bang scene felt like a punch in the stomach.
The Surgeon
Quite a page turner, but I could have done without the romantic interest, which was a bit of a cliché, and certainly without the detailed descriptions of operations.So I guess hospital thrillers are definetily not my thing.
The Rules of Engagement
Boy, what a depressing end! As someone said on goodreads, Loneliness prevails.I enjoyed the book a lot at first, probably because from the synopsis I was expecting a chick-littish or romancey book, so it turned out more than what I had expected. And I could relate so much to the teller's loneliness.
But then the heroin started to annoy me a wee bit, that apparent lack of passion and her patronising view of Betsy were getting on my nerves. I had to keep telling myself it was just her upbringing. Luckily that gets better in the course of the book.
The Woman and the Ape
Well, that was a very surprising book indeed, everybody had said so. Reconciled myself with Peter Hoeg ( I did have some trouble with Smilla). But I must admit the man is good. It is hard to get away with such a plot.And I loved Madelene's emancipation. Thanks for "pushing" it to me, M!

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Enjoyable read, I loved the character of Oskar, and the story of the man who has lost his ability to speak. but I was getting tired of Oskar's quest after while. Luckily that's when he decided to abandon it.I normally am a little suspicious of books about 9/11 but this one avoided being panfletary or sappy, and I'm curious about Foer's other books now.

Haunted
This might be my second favorite Palahniuk ( just after Choke), or that may be because I read it after Rant and I found this one so much better.My favorite story: Foot Work, love the irony. I just have to get my own copy!

The Eyre Affair
I was execting a bit more from this book, due to all the enthusiastic reactions of my friends, but it was a very fun read nonetheless.And I must re-read Jane Eyre, I read it in my student years so I don't remember the details.
And Martin Chuzzlewitt.
I did love the idea of the bookworms and Jane's abduction and retrieval is hillarious.
A Casa dos Budas Ditosos (Plenos Pecados, Luxúria)
A fun read, but a bit embarasiing to read on the subway.
